DigitalOcean Cloud Hack Recapped

26th November, a cold Delhi morning went hot and happening when a fleet of 110 hackers swarmed into the DigitalOcean Cloud Hack. The excitement and enthusiasm in the atmosphere were inexplicable. Not every day, the world’s second largest cloud services provider organizes a hack, do they? The 91 springboard co-working space was jam-packed and hackers huddled with their teams to battle out the problem statements.

Eager minds ready to hack!

The hackathon had two tracks on which the hackers could work:

The Cloud-Track needed the hackers to build something that can make the lives easier for the developers on DigitalOcean platform. It could be a 1-Click install for a very popular open-source project or an application that makes moving apps & data from other clouds easier.

The Mobile-Track demanded some innovation cooking by bringing the cloud closer to mobility and making it accessible on smartphones! The hackers could build an Android / iOS / Windows mobile app to interact with the DigitalOcean platform.

Sumptuous lunch and always available munchies and beverages got the hackers up and running on their ideas. Then came the night and the best part was all the hackers staying back for it! There were laughter, prank attacks, jokes and midnight fun with some serious coding. The morning came and got the hackers up on their feet for the final touches. 24hrs of pure hacking bliss. Taking a quick look at the hack ideas made us realize this is some effing awesome stuff in the making. Here’s how the winners of the individual tracks described their projects:

Team CapsLockHacks (Winners Cloud track) :- These days, every cloud developer is using Docker. Docker has become the de-facto way for developers and system administrators to create lightweight images and deploy to cloud. A quick search on GitHub returned more than 300,000 public projects with Dockerfiles. The idea behind OctoShark is to simplify the workflow of cloud projects. OctoShark aims to provide a one-click solution to deploy any Docker, Vagrant or Laravel Project directly to a new DigitalOcean Droplet. The OctoShark button would be visible on such GitHub projects and it would allow users to spin up a server for that project in a jiffy. No developer now needs to think twice to test a project! Since OctoShark is a chrome extension, it also provides real-time information about your existing droplets and enables you to perform actions on them. The most popular extension available online is deprecated because it was built to work with API V1 and not API V2. We believe with OctoShark, developers will be able to click and run the projects and not worry about anything else!

Team The Avengers( Winners Mobile-Track) :- With the recent demonetization drive, merchants / sellers are forced to accept digital payments and customers need an easy way to make payments to merchants. A very common way of making digital payments is through POS devices. However, the current POS systems allow payments via Credit and Debit cards ONLY. Today, we are solving this problem wherein we are equipping merchants with mPOS device which can accept payments not only through CC, DC but also through Net banking and a variety of wallets as well like PayUmoney wallet, PayTM, FreeCharge and OlaMoney wallet. This mPOS will communicate with user’s device using contactless technology and hence can work even when client app is offline.

Among other honorable mentions were the runners up of both the tracks; Team Avengers for the Cloud Track and Team OSC for the mobile track. S/O to winners Team Mirage too! Oh wait, did I forget to mention? There were prizes galore for everything. It’s the holiday season so everybody deserves a gift, don’t they? $15 worth of DigitalOcean credits for every participant and INR 65,000 worth of prizes for the winners. The giveaway list was amazing so I will take this opportunity to blabber about it here.
