#IBMinclude Challenge: Review of the Hack Camp at IIT Kharagpur

A canopy of silver oaks.

The mystifying green spell as far as the sight goes….

The buzz of the bees, the fireflies at night…

Those bonfires, crazy songs and merrymaking with friends.

The seamless skies of the mornings, the colors of the carnival and the toasts to life…

Oh, how I wish I could go on describing IIT KGP. Have you ever visited the campus during the Springfest or the techno fest Kshitij? You will definitely know what I mean here if you have.

But hey, why am I getting so nostalgic and poetic about KGP? Well o’ well mates, this is because we had a blast at the IBM Hackcamp at IIT KGP on August 27th. Kshitij, Asia’s largest techno-management fest hosted the event in association with Venturesity. An army of 700 hackers swarmed the sprawling campus of IIT KGP spread over 2200 acres. Hackers from far off lined up the night before the hack camp and partied their way to the morning.

The famous 24X7 wifi enabled Nalanda Campus was a witness to this phenomenal hack camp. The clock had only ticked 9 and lo, it was a full house. Mr. Debashish Sinha, the mentor from IBM got the session rolling with his expert lectures. Data analytics was in the air with the data-heads romancing it like never before. Unlike the normal hack camps, this was a 100% hands-on interactive session. It was a two-way learning process with a lot of fun involved.

They say if there were no data analytics, the industries would have been deaf and blind. Imagine a wandering deer on a freeway. You get the point, don’t you? And this hack camp served the message bang on. There were happy faces with Eureka moments every now and then. By the end of it terms like Machine learning using R, Python … IBM Bluemix seemed so colloquial. The data analytics enthusiasts were more than just happy. Oh wait, did I fail to mention that there were two in-house campus rockstars from IIT who mentored the sessions too? Meet Abhinav Agarwalla and Mudit Bachhawat the data analytics – machine learning studs who did so.

Noon came in bringing hunger with it! The happy and hungry hackers raced off to the famous Tikka, Sahara and Dreamland eateries in the campus. After some major feasting, everybody returned just in time for the next session. It was the second round of continued awesomeness with the data fanatics jumping back into action. The final session wrapped up by 6 p.m. We went around asking what was the experience like and everybody seemed happy with the whole affair. One of our participants quoted,”I had to travel to Kharagpur to attend this. And I say this was totally worth it! Mr. Debashish and the mentors of IIT KGP did a great job and I am looking forward to more of these.”

“So shouldn’t you be hitting the party now?”, we asked.

The guy gave in a devil wink saying,”The night hasn’t even begun my friend.”

It sure had not. Needless to say, it was all madness and music for the rest of the night! Yet again a power packed hack camp delivered successfully! Let us pat our and your shoulders together for making this happen. 😛 😉
