Venturesity started as a project about a year ago to connect top notch talent to high growth startups. However, we quickly realized there is a dearth of talent in areas of new technologies such as Mobility (Android, iOS), Big Data (Machine Learning, Hadoop), and Analytics (R). The industry led demand led us to launch some initial courses such as Product Management For Beginners taught by Rutvik Doshi, ex-Google Product Manager and Growth Hacking, a technology investor and digital marketing expert.
Every industry stems from an immense desire or necessity to make things better. Education is no different. Let’s look at the evolution of online education and what Venturesity is doing to make a difference.
Distance Learning: Snail Mail – Online learning: Internet
Universities have been around for centuries and in the early 1700s when Caleb Philips (1928) one of the instructors for shorthand wanted to reach out to a broader audience and send them weekly lesson plans. This was the beginning of correspondence course where the instructional exchange evolved from person-person to person-mail-person. Mail was the “medium” and acted as a bridge.
The second evolution (1930s) was the speed of delivery where channels like radios and televisions was used to deliver courses. Some of them were very creative in their approach and combined – mail-radio-classroom i.e. receive the study materials by mail, broadcast it over radio and have small session discussion in classrooms.
And, then the Internet happened in 1990s.
Internet has been the biggest game changer and key enabler for learning. Online enrollment continues to increase at a steady pace since 2000 and expected to be at 15% of post secondary enrollment by 2015. The contributors are the following – increased bandwidth and technologies developed to enhance student experience.
Venturesity’s ILOC vs MOOCs:
There are many forms of online learning and it has evolved rapidly in the last two decades. The quality of content, delivery and student experience has evolved by several folds. In recent times, Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) has taken the learning industry by storm and democratizing education to some extent. Companies and Institutions have embraced MOOCs and we have seen several – edX (Harvard/MIT), Coursera, Udacity etc.
The biggest failure for MOOC has clearly been it’s ability to create an impact from learning standpoint. The retention and completion rates for MOOC have been less than 7 percent. There are several reasons why MOOC has not worked – learning curves are different, no motivation for students to complete the course, no skin in the game – free is not taken seriously etc. So, what is a better substitute?
Venturesity’s Instructor Led Online Courses:
ILOC – stands for Instructor Led Online Course. While, MOOC serves a purpose, it does not create a meaningful impact. ILOC are virtual classroom taught by instructor in real time.
